Our volunteers who donate their time and energy make NCTRC's services possible! Most of our volunteers serve in our weekly riding lessons and therapy sessions as horse leaders and sidewalkers. These volunteers commit to at least one 30 minute session per week, which allows them to form meaningful relationships with clients and their volunteer team.
If you are unable to commit to a weekly session or to volunteer in the arena, don't worry! We also need volunteers to assist with events, help with administrative work, and help with maintaining the farm. No matter your availability or interests, we probably have a job for you! Some of these jobs are on hold right now due to Covid-19, but please let us know your interest and we can contact you as our needs evolve.
No experience with either horses or individuals with disabilities is necessary to volunteer as we provide our own orientation and training sessions. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old, because they serve a critical role to keep our clients safe during sessions. We love to see families supporting their child's volunteer aspirations, but if your teen is not yet ready to navigate conversations about volunteering without parental assistance, they are likely not ready to react in an emergency situation to keep a client safe, and so we encourage them to wait to apply until they are prepared to take on that level of responsibility. For younger kids looking for volunteer opportunities, Kids That Do Good is a great resource!
Please note that due to Covid-19, all volunteers and staff will be required to wear masks upon request when working with clients and when in the barn. If you are unable to comply with this requirement, we ask that you postpone your volunteer service until a later time.
If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, the first step is to complete our volunteer application below (if you are unable to access the online application, please reach out for a paper copy). We can't wait to hear from you!
Volunteer Roles
Here are some of the many ways you can volunteer at NCTRC
Sidewalkers
Sidewalkers are responsible for the client during a therapeutic riding lesson or hippotherapy session. All session volunteers must be at least 15 years old and attend a new volunteer orientation.
Horse Leaders
Horse Leaders are responsible for the horse during a therapeutic riding lesson or hippotherapy session. In addition to being at least 15 and attending a new volunteer orientation, horse leaders must have at least 2 years of recent horse experience and complete a horse leader evaluation.
Volunteer Groups
Corporate or student groups are always welcome! Group volunteers should be at least 12 years old. If you are interested in making a difference while bonding as a team please contact us.
