What is Therapeutic
Riding?
Therapeutic riding
uses the sport of horseback riding to encourage children, teens and adults with special challenges in many
areas:
- Physical skills:
strength, coordination, balance
- Cognitive
functioning: memory, cause and effect, perception
- Emotional well-being: self-esteem, confidence
- Social skills: sharing, following directions, social cues, patience
- Education knowledge: vocabulary, colors, shapes and numbers
At NCTRC, our horses are selected for their patience and quiet temperaments. Our
classes are taught by certified therapeutic riding instructors, and our riders are assisted by volunteers trained as horse
leaders and/or sidewalkers.
How can I participate?
NCTRC offers three riding sessions per year in the fall, spring and summer. Participants
can take private or group lessons using our indoor and outdoor arenas. We offer both group and individual, or private classes. Group
classes, which last for one hour each week, are limited to four riders and grouped according to age and riding ability as
much as possible. Private classes are 30 minutes each week.
Each new participant is evaluated prior to starting a session. This evaluation
includes assessment of such areas as mobility, communication and ability to follow directions, as well as a mounted assessment
on one of our horses. The results of this evaluation are then used to help determine the type of class which is most
appropriate.
How much does it cost?
The one time evaluation costs $55. Group classes cost $30 per week and private classes cost $45 per week.
Do you offer financial assistance?
We are committed to making participation in our programs available based on
therapeutic need and regardless of financial means. For financial assistance, please download a Financial Aid Form
